| Graduation gowns and caps are, after all, a piece of garment. And a piece of garment is made of fabrics, either particular to the garment or of a more general nature. Academic gowns for graduations are generally made from two kinds of fabrics, which we will shortly discuss. But first, it would do well to brush up on our knowledge of graduation gowns and caps. Most of us can recognize them at a glance, sure, but how many of us can actually cite the exact number of essentials and optional items? Not very many among us, that’s for sure. So, to begin with, let’s take a look at what the academic dress is made up of. The first and the most obvious item is the gown itself. It comes down the front and all around the sides and is generally very loose by nature. The next obvious item is the hat, so clearly visible as it stands proud on the bearer’s head. That hat is generally made of mortarboard, but other designs also exist. The hats need to have tassels on them to make the student qualify in the proper manner. For college students, the graduation gowns and caps must be complimented with a corresponding academic hoods. Sashes are optional for both college scholars and high school students.
Caps and gowns for high school graduations generally need not follow any color-codes or design conventions, as high school graduations are not mandatory nor official. Academic gowns for graduations at the college level need to be of specific sizes and colors so as to identify the bearers’ credentials. If you are going to be buying a graduation gown and cap, either for yourself or for students, you would do well to look into the fabric that it is made of. If you are going to be using your gown on a frequent basis (college students, especially), then you should invest in a polyester based graduation gown. Polyester is more durable and tear and wrinkle resistant than most other fabrics. It can also be hand washed, so you won’t be spending your hard-earned money on getting it dry-cleaned all the time. However, polyester gowns are not as long lasting and may become faded with repeated washing and prolonged exposure to the sun. If you want a piece that is softer to the touch and longer lasting, then you might want to purchase an acetate based fabric gown. Acetate is softer and moth resistant. However, it needs to be dry-cleaned otherwise the results can be disastrous. Acetate is slowly being phased out by most manufacturers, so you may want to hurry if you are bent on purchasing a graduation gown made of acetate materials. Although polyester should be suitable for most people, sometimes it just doesn’t do, in which case you will have to expand your search radius.
Pick the fabric that suits your needs and your personality best. If you are going to be storing your graduation gown away, then an acetate based gown would be the best choice.
