| When the divorce settlement is done and dusted and single parents wonder what they might do for the rest of their lives, they cannot overlook the benefits of furthering their education. This can help them focus on something other than the memory of a darker period of their lives, whilst preparing to increase their income earning potential in the future.
One might wonder when they are supposed to find time for study when they are working and caring for their children. The answer is that if you are determined to change your life for the better, you will make time. If the subject of your study is interesting enough, and it helps take you away from things that you find upsetting to remember, you will be able to allocate time to it when the children are asleep or busy with their homework or other activities. There is also an opportunity to study or write notes when travelling to and from work.
Back to Basics
The place to start is the high school education. I was never really satisfied with my final grades, so I went to TAFE, which is the main technical and further education institution in Australia, to enroll in some subjects. I took English Advanced, Modern History and Ancient History. These were my areas of interest, and it made perfect sense to study humanities rather than other subjects that I was not very strong in or interested in. My grades made the exercise worthwhile.
Education
I was able to enroll in an online university, as this was the only mode of delivery I could manage in my life. Lectures were not feasible in my timetable. Nine subjects later, I am very pleased that I did it, and it fits into my lifestyle. After completing my first university subject, the whole exercise of learning had become a pleasure to me, and it was a chance to zone out of the things that were tormenting me for years. It helped me to find a new opportunity in life to do what makes me happy. Now I learn because I want to, because I'm motivated to work in another field than I have been working, and university is my means to make it happen.
Moving Forward
While moving house, shopping and travel are the best medicine for some single parents after divorce, my method is education. It is the best thing we can do for ourselves to move forward. The benefits are the increase in learning, as well as becoming a good example to our children, showing them that we are strong enough to face anything that can come our way. At some point, if we enjoy our subject of study enough, we will find a way to make a living from it. Then we will be able to enjoy the other things in life like travel and shopping, and we will be able to live within our means do enjoy these things.
There are many examples of people in our community who have transformed their lives through education – and the financial rewards when we work in a higher-paid position will help us forget our exes altogether.
